Public artwork, Vlissingen
In 2020, I was invited by the art organization KipVis to submit a proposal for the sculpture park Ik ben een god in het diepst van mijn gedachten (“I am a god in the depths of my thoughts”) in Vlissingen. Together with two other artists, I developed a site-specific concept in response to their open call.
My design, Something to Hold On To, is a sculptural work that symbolizes support and resilience. It takes the form of handrails, functional objects that we use to steady ourselves, reimagined and bent into new shapes. These rails were welded together from different segments, each with its own curve, suggesting both fragility and connection. The piece invites touch, interaction, and reflection: what do we hold on to, and when?
The final artwork was selected by a vote from local residents, who chose my design as their favorite. For me, this process of community engagement was a meaningful part of the work, it became not just a gesture of support, but also something shaped by collective choice.
